How to switch wireless carriers without losing your number

The safest switch is a sequence, not a leap. Keep your old service active until the number transfer finishes, and collect the account details you will need before you begin.

Moving your number is usually straightforward, but the order matters. Cancelling too early can release the number you meant to keep. A few minutes of preparation can also prevent a transfer from stalling over a mismatched name, address, or account PIN.

Before you start

First, confirm that your phone is unlocked and compatible with the service you are considering. “Compatible” is more specific than simply accepting a SIM: a phone also needs the right network bands and software support for calling, messaging, and data.

Review any device financing separately from service. A remaining phone balance may become due when you leave. Save recent bills and account records before you lose access to the old account portal.

Your transfer checklist

  • Current account number
  • Number-transfer PIN or account PIN
  • Account holder name and billing address exactly as recorded
  • Unlocked, compatible phone or a ready replacement
  • Access to both old and new service during activation

Protect your number

Do not cancel your current line before requesting the transfer. The new provider submits the transfer request using your existing account information. Your old line normally closes after the transfer completes, but you should verify that directly on your final statement.

If a request fails, compare every submitted field with the old account. Even small differences can matter. Avoid submitting repeated requests while one is still open; that can make the status harder to untangle.

Time the transfer

Start when you can tolerate a short interruption and have access to Wi-Fi. Avoid beginning immediately before travel, an important call, or the end of a billing cycle unless you have confirmed how the old provider handles partial months.

After activation

Test outgoing and incoming calls, text messages, mobile data, voicemail, and any account security codes you rely on. Then check that the old service stopped billing the transferred line and that any remaining lines stayed active.

Keep your final bill. It can document device balances, credits, or account changes if a dispute appears later.
